Fractional CMO costs: what does marketing leadership on demand cost?

According to two providers, a fractional CMO in Germany usually costs between €900 and €1,600 net per day. At one day a week that is roughly €3,500 to €6,500 a month, at two days €7,000 to €13,000. Reliable market statistics barely exist, the ranges come from individual providers. The biggest influence on the price is the number of days per week and the scope of responsibility. At THE Orange Growth we set the cost individually after the B2B growth diagnosis.

These are published offers from individual providers, not a market statistic. Brandancy itself writes that reliable statistics for the German-speaking region barely exist. Providers usually quote net prices. What is included in the price matters more than the range: strategy alone is cheaper, strategy plus execution and agency management costs more. Ask every provider about it.

Which pricing models are there?

  • Day or hourly rate: transparent, fits when demand fluctuates. Harder to plan.
  • Monthly retainer: fixed days per week for a fixed amount. The most common model and easy to plan. One to three days a week are typical.
  • Fixed-price project: clearly scoped, for example a diagnosis with an action plan. A good start because it ends in a result.
  • Success-based shares are rare and need clean measurement all the way to revenue.

What does the price depend on?

Worked example: fractional CMO or permanent hire?

Our own calculation from Brandancy's figures (October 2026), all values per year.

Own calculation from published provider figures, excluding search costs.
ItemPermanent CMOFractional CMO, 2 days per week
Salary or fee€140,000 to €220,000€100,000 to €150,000
Employer's additional costs (20 to 25 %)roughly €28,000 to €55,000none
Total, excluding searchroughly €168,000 to €275,000roughly €100,000 to €150,000

On top of a permanent hire come search costs (for executive search, 25 to 30 percent of an annual salary according to Brandancy) and several months in which the position is vacant.

Be careful with the comparison: two days a week are not five. If you need leadership on site every day or lead a large team, a permanent hire often serves you better. Other providers quote much higher salaries for full-time CMOs (Jolly Marketer: base pay of €200,000 to €500,000, corporate level). The ranges depend heavily on company size and industry.

How you can tell after 90 days whether it works

Anyone who promises to double your revenue in four weeks is selling hope. Check four things instead:

  1. PrioritiesThere is a short, reasoned list of what counts now and what is deliberately dropped.
  2. OwnershipFor every goal it says who decides and who is accountable.
  3. MetricsMarketing and sales measure with the same numbers, each with a source.
  4. DecisionsIt is documented what was decided and why.

This matches the result of our B2B growth diagnosis with a 90-day plan.

Who is a fractional CMO for?

  • B2B companies without their own head of marketing
  • Marketing and sales do not work toward a shared goal
  • Growth should become plannable and measurable
  • Less suitable: if only hands-on execution is missing and no leadership is needed

According to Brandancy, roughly €3,500 to €6,500 net at one day per week and €7,000 to €13,000 at two days (as of October 2026). Another provider quotes €7,500 to €8,500 for two days. At THE Orange Growth we set the cost individually after the growth diagnosis.
